Evnia—A New Range of Philips Monitors and Accessories to Reinvent the Rules of Gaming

The gaming industry has come a long way. From its simple, two-dimensional debut in the 1970s and 80s, gaming has kept pace with the rapid evolution of digital technology, rising to become not just a form of entertainment but a truly immersive sensorial experience with uniquely powerful appeals. Increasingly, modern gamers expect a brand that reflects the diversity of their tastes and desires while their identities are embraced. In light of this, MMD, the leading display specialist and brand license partner for Philips monitors, is delighted to announce the launch of Evnia.

The word Evnia (Greek: Εύνοια) consists of eu (good) and nous (mind), which literally means "well mind" and "smart thinking". Evnia is used as a word to show interest to support and protect someone or something. It's often used in the context of luck. Everyone can be a gamer, and Evnia, true to the name, supports the joy of gaming for all. The definition of a typical gamer is more diverse than ever - however, the stereotype that gaming is only for teenagers is still the norm. The need for a welcoming community required a brand that could embrace every gamer, making them feel truly part of the group. Starting from its unique design, Evnia differentiates from the crowd of spec-only-driven aggressive models, bringing back the joy and fun of gaming, keeping emotional benefits at the core.

Intel Core i9-13900K Breaks Overclocking World Record at 8.8 GHz

Intel Core i9-13900K processor has just been launched, and overclockers worldwide got their hand on a few samples to make history. According to the HWBot submission, a Swedish overclocker named "elmor" has pushed Intel's top-end consumer SKU to a fantastic 8.812 GHz. For more than eight years, the record for the single-highest overclocking speed was held by AMD FX-8370, from the now-bygone era of AMD Black Edition processors. The overclocking attempt was performed using liquid nitrogen (LN2) that cools the chip using its −195.8 °C temperature. Pushing core voltage to 1.850 Volts and VCCIN to 2 Volts, multiplier set to x88, and a bus speed of 100.15 MHz. In addition to the Core i9-13900K CPU, elmor used ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 APEX motherboard and 32 GB DDR5 GSKILL memory running at 4808 MT/s.

As a reminder, the FX-8370 CPU was holding the number one sport for eight years with a speed of 8.722 GHz. Beating the FX-8370 by just 90 MHz, it will be interesting to see if any of the upcoming CPU SKUs can match this overclocking record, and we are curious if any contender will come to beat elmor's current record.

Internet Data Transmission Record Shattered by Danish Researchers

Transmitting data over the internet is something that just happens for most of us, but the infrastructure that's powering the internet is full of bottlenecks and researchers around the world are testing new ways of being able to transmit more data using already installed fibre. A team of researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has managed to break the data transmission record by quite some margin, using something called a frequency comb, which is a photonics chip. The team of researchers hit a data transmission speed of an insane 1.84 Petabits per second over a distance of 7.9 kilometres—or 4.9 miles if you like—using standard fibre optic lines.

This equates to more than the total volume of global internet traffic that's being sent every second, according to DTU. Although the distance is far from the longest, as a team of Japanese researchers have managed to transmit a 319 Terrabit per second datastream over a distance of 3,001 km (1,864 miles), although they used signal amplifiers every 70 km to reach this distance. The DTU team's frequency comb was made by Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and it breaks down the infrared laser that's being used to transmit the data, into a rainbow spectrum, where each colour corresponds to a frequency equivalent. This allows multiple streams of data to be encoded with data, before being re-integrated and sent as a single infrared laser signal over the fibre. According to DTU, without the frequency comb, they would've needed more than a thousand lasers to achieve the same speeds using state-of-the-art commercial equipment. The team at DTU expects to be able to hit speeds of up to 100 Petabit per second in the future.

IBM Artificial Intelligence Unit (AIU) Arrives with 23 Billion Transistors

IBM Research has published information about the company's latest development of processors for accelerating Artificial Intelligence (AI). The latest IBM processor, called the Artificial Intelligence Unit (AIU), embraces the problem of creating an enterprise solution for AI deployment that fits in a PCIe slot. The IBM AIU is a half-height PCIe card with a processor powered by 23 Billion transistors manufactured on a 5 nm node (assuming TSMC's). While IBM has not provided many details initially, we know that the AIU uses an AI processor found in the Telum chip, a core of the IBM Z16 mainframe. The AIU uses Telum's AI engine and scales it up to 32 cores and achieve high efficiency.

The company has highlighted two main paths for enterprise AI adoption. The first one is to embrace lower precision and use approximate computing to drop from 32-bit formats to some odd-bit structures that hold a quarter as much precision and still deliver similar result. The other one is, as IBM touts, that "AI chip should be laid out to streamline AI workflows. Because most AI calculations involve matrix and vector multiplication, our chip architecture features a simpler layout than a multi-purpose CPU. The IBM AIU has also been designed to send data directly from one compute engine to the next, creating enormous energy savings."

ASRock Z790 PG Sonic Leaks, Most Likely Limited Edition for the Asian Market

Today Intel launched its 13th gen Core processors alongside the Z790 chipset, which in turn lead to a lot of new motherboards being available. However, it appears that ASRock is working on a special edition of its Z790 PG Riptide board that has something of an unusual twist. The board is known as the Z790 PG Sonic and appears to be some kind of cooperation with Sega, since the board carries clear Sonic the Hedgehog branding.

The board seems to be some kind of limited edition version of the Z790 PG Riptide, as we can't spot any features that have changed, at least not based on the pictures posted by @momomo_us on Twitter. The top of the board has Sonic themed heatsinks, as well as some of the printing on the PCB and the rear is adorned with a rather large Sonic in white on the black PCB. Obviously the packaging is also adorned with a Sonic print, but there doesn't appear to be any other connection to Sonic or Sega, which makes the whole partnership a bit of a mystery at the moment, but it's highly likely that we're looking at a limited edition product for the Asian markets here.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 isn't a Rebadged RTX 4080 12GB, To Be Cut Down

It turns out that NVIDIA didn't just cancel (unlaunch) the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB last week, but also shelved the SKU until it is needed in the product stack. This is probably because NVIDIA intended to sell it at $900, and will find it difficult to justify a xx70-class SKU at this price-point. A Moore's Law is Dead report goes into the possible reasons NVIDIA shelved the RTX 4080 12 GB, and why it won't be rebadged as the RTX 4070.

The RTX 4070, although expected to be based on the same AD104 silicon as the RTX 4080 12 GB, won't have the same configuration. The RTX 4080 12 GB maxed out the AD104, enabling all 7,680 CUDA cores on the silicon. It's likely that the RTX 4070 will have fewer CUDA cores, even if it retains the 192-bit memory interface and 12 GB memory size. The memory clock could be changed, too. The RTX 4080 12 GB was essentially NVIDIA trying to upsell the successor of the RTX 3070 Ti (maxed out GA104) as an xx80-class SKU, at a higher price-point. Moore's Law is Dead also showed off possible designs of the RTX 4070 Founders Edition, revealing a compact design with many of the same design improvements implemented with the RTX 4090 FE. This card comes in a strictly 2-slot design.

EK Releases Double Rotary Fittings with 21 and 28 mm Offsets

EK, the premium water cooling gear manufacturer, is expanding the Quantum Torque line of fittings by introducing double rotary offset 21 and 28 mm adapter fittings. The EK-Quantum Torque Double Rotary Offsets are premium-quality male-female interconnects with G1/4" ports offsetted by 21 or 28 mm. The fittings come in two offset sizes - 21 and 28 mm, and can rotate around two axes due to two revolvable joints. They can be used to offset two parallel or perpendicular tubes and are best used on GPU and CPU water blocks to align the tube directly with the distribution plate port. Aesthetically, they perfectly match the fittings and adapters from the EK-Quantum Torque series.

This double rotary offset series consists of 8 different models with varying finishes and offset sizes. They are all CNC machined out of brass with high-quality NBR O-rings for sealing. Unlike EK's previous Rotary Offsets for 7 and 14 mm, these fittings consist of two pieces and feature a rotating element in the middle as well. This enables them to not only offset the port but also change the angle. There are tactile clicks at every 45-degree turn to easily position the fitting the way your build requires, but the offset can also be stopped and used at any angle.
